Heading further north we were hoping for a cooler climate however the fierce heat wave that in recent weeks has left much of Europe and the UK wilting under its scorching sun just seems to be continuing.

Oulches is situated in the Indre department and Centre-Loire Valley region of France. It’s a sleepy village with just a post office, the bread man calls most mornings and the butcher once a week but it’s a great area for walking.

Our friends Pete and Shirley have a house in the village of Oulches and it’s been over 4 yrs since they were last here. So with things slightly overgrown and in need of some attention, we arrange to call in to see if there’s anything we can help with.

Pete and Shirley’s

Their son Scott and his daughter Ashleigh are already busy working away when we arrive so John mucks in where he can but unfortunately by lunchtime the heat has got the better of all of us, even a dip in their pool seems an effort.

Earning his dinner

We spend five days in Oulches and apart from a spluttering of rain late one evening the sun continues to beam down and we decide it’s time to move on.

33 and its 9pm
Pete, introduces us to Carly who owns the Rock Lakes fishing venue. The ex-millers fishery is stocked well with plenty of carp and catfish, some weighing up to 54lb and 195lb respectively, the smaller lake at the back holds carp and tench.

We go back down the road to the village of Chaillac where their annual festival is taking place, and when we arrive the aire is right next door which at first we thought was great, we had an amazing view across the lake but come 5 am the following morning and the music is still blaring and people are knocking over our chairs walking past we have other thoughts.

Fantastic fireworks make up for the noise
Let’s just say this situation was quickly resolved and no garage assistance was needed this time

Driving back through Chaillac it looks like a charming little town and it’s a shame we don’t stop but today we just want somewhere quiet and a bit of shade, it’s been a long night.

Our view in Chaillac, apparently the old town was particularly famous in the Middle Ages thanks to the viscounts of Brosse, but its real fame comes from mining the largest barite and fluorite deposit in the world.
Belabre village, lunch in the shade

Passing the Loire river surrounded by meadows and woodland we stop at a couple of villages but neither of them has much shade and it’s getting late in the day so we finally decide on the aire in the village of Angles-Sur-l’Anglin.

Angles-sir-l’Anglin

Listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France, it doesn’t take us long to realise why with its picturesque houses set next to the peaceful river, and the ruins of its medieval castle dominating high, it’s certainly full of charm.

Parked up under the trees we are joined by one other van for the night as we try to decide on where to go next.
